A freshman named “Megan” talks about her first month of school at MLS. She’ll have updates as the year goes along. Grade school students especially will enjoy hearing about her experiences and those of her school mates.

I am running track for my spring sport. We have been very successful this year. Many of the girls have already lettered and I am very close. Some people have also won some medals. Our relay teams are doing a great job. We have even come from behind a few times to win! We unfortunately only have 17 girls on the team this year. So we make do with what we have and run our best. We have all tried new things so that we can have at least one person in every event. We are all constantly improving our times, distances, and heights in our events. With a lot of practice and hard work we will have a successful season. We have been fighting some injuries and sicknesses, but we have gotten through them. We only have a few more meets left. We hope to do well in the remainder of the season.

The Few, The Proud, The Committed.

The girls JV basketball team had a very successful season. We only had two returning sophomores, seven freshmen, and one new transfer sophomore. We ended the season with 11 wins and 9 losses. There were very many close games both ways too. We won most games within ten points and we even had three over times! Two of which we won. We were known for our close and intense games. Both times we played St. Louis though, we won by about 20 points. We played Swan Valley in the regular season and won even though they are a class B team. Then we had to play them again for a cross over game, but we lost the second time around. But I think that game we had one of our best quarters ever. We were down by 16 at half time and we came out and scored 16 points to tie it up within the first two minutes! It was awesome! The other cross over game was against Caro. We lost that game though. But there were a few other teams that we split with in conference. Another awesome game was against Ithaca. We were losing and not have the best of games, but we got it within one point with about 9 seconds left and I got the ball and threw up a three pointer to win the game! So it was a close one.

Some highlights of other games include the following: some amazing stuffs, draining a few threes, making almost 100% of free throws for some mostly just the last game, making good moves under the basket to make the shot, and getting long passes and putting up a layup. We all had a very fun and successful season. We do wish we could have maybe had a few more wins, but we were proud and hope to all come out even stronger next year. We also thank out amazing fans who came out to support us.

On Friday, October 16th, the Varsity football team played their second to last game of the season at Merrill. It is 20 miles away from Saginaw. As a way to show our school spirit, the cross country team ran the football all the way from Saginaw to Merrill. Noah and Micah started running before school got out and we drove out to meet up with them. They had already run about 12 miles. We then helped take over and ran the football the rest of the way as like a relay race. We would run on and off every mile for as much as we wanted to run. There would be two or three people running at once. The football was always with us when we ran. It was a great team effort. Noah brought along our school spirit cape so that as we were running, people could know who we were. We also had the cow bell that the school always brings to games and we used it as we were running into town to the football field yelling “Go red!”

The football team and even the whole school thought it was a great idea and everyone was so proud of us for doing it. My parents were able to drive out and watch us a little bit as we were running and they encouraged us to keep going. I even got to carry the football for a mile! It was so much fun. And afterwards, we got pizza and went to the football game. I will never forget how much fun that was and I am looking forward to doing it next year. It is a good workout and a great way to show school spirit and support for our team! Go Cardinals!

We have just finished our 2009 Homecoming week here at MLS. It was so much fun. Each class gets a hall way to decorate and the freshman actually did it this year! We made lots of posters and put them up. Our theme for homecoming was From Age To Age. So every day this week we dressed up for a different style of music. Then every night we had something fun planned to do. On Monday night we watched the movie Back To the Future. On Tuesday night we had powder puff football. It is where the senior girls play the junior girls in football and some of the senior guys dressed up as pom-pom girls.  It was a really good game. The seniors won 8-7. The freshman had to parade around with their sandwich boards at the game. On Wednesday night they had guitar hero set up in the commons for people to play. On Thursday there was macho volleyball. The senior guys played the junior guys. The seniors won, but the juniors put up a good fight. Then on Friday, we had our pep rally. The professors and tutors put on a funny skit. They all dressed up and did an act. Some of the students even had pre recorded things that were fun to watch. We had the big game on Saturday afternoon. The freshman had to parade around in front of the stands with our sandwich boards to show our school spirit. The game was a lot of fun and we had our class representatives announced at half time. We ended up losing the game, but it was still a lot fun and they played well. We had the dance that night and it was a great turnout. We all had a lot of fun. I am looking forward to homecoming next year!

I came to MLS a week early for cross country camp. It was a great way to get in shape and I got to know some of my classmates before school even started. To be involved in a sport is wonderful. You get to know other people, which is a really nice thing if you are new. It also keeps you active and gives you something to do after school. There is always a choice of sports, because there is more than one to pick from during each season. I am in cross country right now and loving it. It is getting me in shape for basketball and I love to run at the meets to try and beat my last time. I hope to improve greatly by the end of the season.

The classes are all different from my grade school. I go to a different classroom for each class and learn about just that subject for 45 minutes. At my grade school I had only two different classrooms each day. But I like changing rooms and getting a different professor for each class. They specialize in that in that one subject, so they know more about it. I really enjoy each of my classes. The professors do funny things to make the class fun and easier to learn things. None of the classes are way too hard. The professors do a great job on helping you to understand everything and they are always willing to help you out. I also like the study halls because it sets apart 2 hours of your day that you have to sit down and get your homework done. It really creates good habits and study skills.

I have made so many friends here so far and I have only been here for a month. I feel like I have known them for years, when really I haven’t. When you live in the dorm, you get to know everyone so well because you live with them all week long.  You get to have a lot of fun times with them and you feel like you are just one big family.
