The Reluctant Dragon
Children's Theater 2008
Adapted by Steven Anderson from the classic children's book by Kenneth Grahame (author of The Wind in the Willows), The Reluctant Dragon is the story of a shy young boy who discovers a friendly, mushroom-loving dragon living in the Downs above his home. The two share a love for books and soon become fast friends.
Not long afterwards, however, the dragon is discovered by the townsfolk, who send for St George, the famous dragon-slayer. St George, by this time, is quite elderly and has little interest in chasing dragons, but he resolves to do it as a matter of duty. The boy introduces St. George to the dragon, and the two discover they really have no reason to fight.
Yet they realize they need to stage some sort of battle to satisfy the townsfolk. What results is exciting and amusing for everyone. This production, spiced with a selection of charming songs, is sure to be a crowd-pleaser for all ages.
