EXTRA-CURRICULAR CODE OF MICHIGAN LUTHERAN SEMINARY

Students who participate in extracurriculars are ambassadors of Michigan Lutheran Seminary in a special way. By virtue of participation they are publicly identified with the school and everything for which it stands. The coaches, advisors, directors, and the administration of MLS give careful thought to that public identity as they make decisions guiding the conduct of all participants.

ACADEMICS Extra-curricular participants are to achieve and maintain good academic standing as established by the school. Those with limited eligibility may practice but may not represent the school. Those ineligible must drop practice as well. Any change in eligibility takes place after the academic committee completes its grade review after the first, second, fourth and fifth terms, or when a new semester begins. Academic considerations take precedence over extra-curricular considerations. In cases where "represent the school" is not clearly defined, the chairman of the extra-curricular council will decide how to apply limited eligibility status.

ATTENDANCE Extra-curricular participants attend all practices, meetings, and performances unless excused in advance by the person in charge of the activity, or unless detained for academic reasons, such as Period Nine.

CONDUCT In general, the rules of the school that apply to all students enrolled at MLS are the rules that govern the conduct of students involved in extracurriculars. In addition, the following rules of conduct apply to participants in extracurriculars:

1) Students who are campused or decampused may practice and perform in extra-curriculars during the time of discipline, provided that written permission from the adult in charge of the activity to the dean of students has been granted. Students who are dormed or de-dormed may not practice or perform in extracurriculars during the time of that discipline.

2) Discipline for any serious offense may affect participation in extracurriculars, as determined by the dean of students. Such matters will be handled on an individual or case-by-case basis. It is possible for such discipline to carry over into the following school year.

3) The use of tobacco in any form, alcoholic beverages of any kind, and non-prescribed controlled drugs in any way will result in some degree of forfeiture of participation in an extra- curricular activity. For example, in athletics, violation of these training rules will result in forfeiture of participation for the remainder of the current season and for a minimum of one month's time. Two violations in one school year will result in forfeiture of participation for all athletics that year.

4) Other rules of conduct may include items such as curfew, dress, personal appearance, and the like. The adult in charge of each activity, under the guidance of the school's extra-curricular council, will share all rules of conduct with all participants at the beginning of each activity.

NOTIFICATION The extra-curricular code will be distributed to all students and parents at
registration time each school year. It is also to be read to all participants at the beginning of each activity's season.
