COACH NOTES-

STANDISH
-The Lady Cardinals opened their season at home vs. Standish - Sterling.  Seminary’s inexperience showed as play was ragged in the first half against a very experienced Standish team.  The visitors jumped out to a 10-2 lead, but MLS fought back to trail by 7.  Sem played even in the 2nd but a flurry of closing baskets gave them a 13 point lead at the half.  The 3rd quarter belonged to Standish, but the more the Lady Cardinals got use to playing in a game situation, the better they became. JV MLS-47 Standish-38

ST. CHARLES-Seminary won their first game of the season by a 35-32 score over St. Charles.  It was also the first league game of the year.  The Lady Cardinals led the whole game except for a minute early in the 4th when they trailed 29-28.  They closed out the game outscoring the lady Bulldogs 7-3.  Sem led 16-11 at the half, but neither side could be much momentum.  St. Charles got up 14 more shots than Seminary due to outrebounding and having fewer turnovers.  MLS, however, shot better, going 13/37 compared to 14/53 for the visitors.  The difference was that Sem was 4/14 from beyond the arc compared to 1 for 11 for St. Charles.  The Lady Bulldogs had a chance to tie the game with 20, or so, seconds left, but missed a 2-point shot.  MLS got the rebound and ran out the clock.  JV MLS-33  ST. CHARLES-30

GLADWIN-MLS 47
Gladwin  39

The Flying G’s came into the Seminary gym with a 3-0 record but left with their wings clipped.  The Lady Cardinals got off to a flying start by playing good defense and shooting the ball really well in the first half.  Seminary had a 32-13 lead until Gladwin’s star player hit a buzzer beater from just inside half court to cut the lead to 32-16 and give  the visitors inspiration heading into the half.  After an equal third quarter Gladwin managed to cut MLS’s lead to 7 halfway through the 4th, but late baskets by Tara Martinez and Marjorie Buelow plus free throws kept the Flying G’s at bay.  Seminary was 20 of 49 from the floor which their opponents made 15 of 46.  Kaitlin Henderson did a good job on both ends of the floor with 15 points and 14 rebounds.

ST. LOUIS-54
MLS-45

The Lady Cardinals traveled to St. Louis for a conference game against the Sharks and came out on the short end of a 54-45 score.  Playing during exam week hurt as the team seemed mentally fatigued, making unnecessary fouls and poor decisions.  Never the less, the Lady Cardinals were in the game right till the end.  Sem had a 14 – 13 lead after one, but foul trouble forced a couple of key players to have to sit for portions of the game.  St. Louis took a 6 point lead at the half.  The Cardinals battled back to within 3 several times but couldn’t get any closer than that.   The difference ended up being 12 made free throw for St. Louis to 3 for Sem.

The Lady Cardinals traveled the long road to Ithaca Friday night and came home with a sweet victory.  MLS played their best offensive game of the season scoring 66 points.  The defense, however, still needs a lot of work.  Timely shooting allowed Sem to jump out to a 33-26 half-time lead.  However, the Yellowjackets got their buzz on and actually took a 5 point lead towards the end of the 3rd.  A couple of closing baskets got Sem a one point lead going into the last stanza.  Three triples in the 4th and just enough free throws gave the victory.  The Cardinals were 8 of 13 from downtown and 14 of 39 from inside the arc.

Box score
Marjorie Buelow              19 pts., 3 steals
Anna Lindloff                    14 pts., (4 3s)

Faith Schroeder                 2 pts.
Amanda Aldrich                 2 pts.
Kaitlin Henderson             6 pts. 8 rebs.

SWAN VALLEY-Seminary did not handle Swan Valley’s pressure defense very well in their loss.  The Vikings forced MLS into 8 turnovers in the first quarter and 27 for the game.  The result was forced shots and a rushed offense.  The Lady Cardinals shot 21% for the game to 34% for Swan Valley.  Still Sem was in the game, trailing by 4 going into the 4th.  A couple of defensive lapses and poor free throw shooting down the stretch spelled doom for Seminary.

JV MLS VS. SWAN VALLEY-  MLS-45  SWAN VALLEY-42

VARSITY- MLS 56-Merrill  37-On the road for the 4th straight game the Lady Cardinals started slowly in the first quarter but finished with a bang, hitting 4 3-pointers to take a 12-9 lead.  The "three" was really the story of the game as MLS had 7 of them by half (to help build a 29-17 lead) and 9 for the game.  Good ball movement against Merrill's zone led to open shots and timely makes.  Altogether Sem was 9 of 17 from beyond the arc.

Box score:

MLS 50-Breckenridge 20

The Lady Cardinals played their best defensive game of the year putting pressure on the Husky's ball handlers and forcing 36 turnovers.  24 of the turnovers were steals which led to easy baskets.  Breckenridge had trouble getting shots off a MLS spurted to a 26 - 6 halftime lead.  Good offensive rebounding also contributed to Sem getting 21 more shots from the floor and 20 more free throw attempts.  The win kept the Cardinals 2 games behind division leader Valley Lutheran whom the Ladies host on Friday night.

Box Score

Valley Lutheran  53- MLS  47

The Lady Cardinals played the league-leading Chargers from Valley Lutheran in a close match of division rival.  Sem jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the first only to see Valley make a late charge for a 15-14 quarter lead.  The Chargers stretched it to 4 at the half, but never had a lead of more than 6.  A 3 pointer by Anna Lindloff cut the score to 50-47 with 2 minutes to go, but a couple of turnovers and forced shots by MLS sealed their doom.  Tyhe game was played rather equally as far as number of shots, percentage, rebounds and turnovers.

Box Score

Anna Schneider        10 pts. 8 rebs.

MLS 53-St. Charles 32

The Lady Cardinals got off to a 7-0 lead at St. Charles by hitting 3 of their first 4 shots.  The shooting wne cold and the Lady Bulldogs not only got back into the game but took a 113-7 1st quarter lead.  Sem was relying on outside shots and not attacking the basket.  A switch in defenses held St. Charles to only 19 points the rest of the way, while the Cards attacked the basket and started hitting from the outside again.

Seminary defense forced 21 Bulldog turnovers to only 9 for the visitors.  The Cardinals continued their fine outside shooting hitting 5 of 20 from outside the arc to only 2 of 13 for the hosts.

Carrollton 49-MLS 37

MLS started the second round of conference play at Carrollton who has only 1 loss on the season.  The Cardinals played much better than the first game which tends to show that they are getting better as the seasons progresses.  Some timely outside shooting pushed the Lady Cardinals to a 19-11 lead halfway through the 2nd period, but it was a lead they couldn’t hold.  The Cavaliers stormed back to take a 25 – 21 halftime lead.  Sem remained within striking distance and cut the lead to 3 early in the 4th only to see Carrollton’s dominant center take over.

Box Score

MLS 53-Caro 40

Seminary came away a winner in their first crossover, this one against the East Division of the Tri-Valley Conference foes, the Caro Tigers.  MLS had trouble shooting and playing defense in the first half and as a result, trailed 22-19.  Moving our feet on defense and 2 third quarter 3s gave Sem a 13-4 advantage and a 6 point lead going into the 4th.  Three quick baskets put the game out of reach as the Lady Cardinals extended their lead to as much as 16 points by making their free throws as Caro fouled in desperation.  MLS grabbed a season high 21 offensive rebounds but had trouble making the put backs.  Sem shot only 30% from the floor  to 35% for the Tigers, but due to rebounding and winning the battle of turnovers got up 20 more shots.

Box Score
Marjorie Buelow              18 pts., 11 rebs, 6 steals
Anna Lindloff                      5 pts.
Anna Schneider                  6 pts., 7 rebs. 6 steals

MLS  34-Swan Valley 31

MLS got a little satisfaction in beating the Swan Valley Vikings, a team they lost to earlier this year, 40-31.  This was a crosover game vs. the Central Division of the Tri-Valley Conference.  Seminay started strong, jumping out to a 12-4 lead. but lead only 17-15 at the half.  The lead bounced back and forth several times in the 3rd and 4th quarters.  A basket by Marjorie Buelow gave the Cardinals a 31-29 lead.  After that, Sem made just enough free throws to hold off the charging Vikings.  Swan Valley missed a half-court shot at the buzzer that could hve tied the game.

Box Score
Marjorie Buelow       11 pts. 3 steals
Anna Lindloff             1 pt.
Anna Schneider       13 pts., 10 rebounds, 4 steals
Tara Martinez            2 pts.

MLS 43-Ithaca 34

The Lady Cardinals won their 3rd game in a row by downing the Yellowjackets at home.  After an even 1st quarter MLS was able to drive the Ithaca defense to take a 24-15 lead.  The much taller Yellowjacket team responded with a 2-3 zone that kept Sem shooting from the outside.  Although Ithaca controlled the boards, the Cardinals continued their good shooting of late to maintain the lead.  MLS shot 48% to 25% for the visitors.  The Yellowjackets, howeve, out rebounded Sem 12-3 on the offensive boards.  The Cardinals were able to hold Ithaca's outstanding point guard, who was averaging 18 a game, to just 6.

St. Louis 41-MLS 38

The Lady Cardinals outplayed St. Louis in almost every aspect of the game but came away the loser in the make-up snow date.  Seminary had more rebounds, fewer turovers and 25 more shots, but just couldn't make baskets consistently on their home floor.  In fact, they made only 4 baskets in the first half and trailed 20-10.  In the second half, MLS made runs repeatedly but failed to get a defensive stop when it really mattered.  Late in the game the Cardinals were down 3 , with the ball, but a turnover kept them from getting a potential game-tying shot.  For the game Sem shot 23% to 45% for the Sharks

Box Score
Marjorie Buelow         8 pts. 6 rebs, 3 steals

Nouvel 41-MLS  35

For the second game in a row the Lady Cardinals came out flat, unable to effectively play defense or put the ball in the basket.  Sem got down 16-0 before getting untracked.  After that, it was mostly MLS.  The Cardinals outscored the Panthers in every quarter and got the deficit down to 3 with 2 minutes to play only to have a couple of key turnovers and some near steals.

MLS  55- Merrill  32

It took until the second half, but the Cardinals finally got on track and put on a good show for the home crowd at Parent's Night.  Leading by only 19-16 at the half, Sem went on a shooting spree that saw them score 36 points in the second half.  Included in the total was 5 3s.  MLS controlled the boards against the Vandals and forced 22 turnovers.

Valley Lutheran - 63  MLS  -30

MLS traveled to Valley Lutheran for their last regular season game.  Not much went right.  Sem got outplayed in every aspect of the game.  The Charger’s defense limited the Lady Cardinals to 20% shooting, while Valley shot 40%.  Seminary played tight in the beginning and missed some close-in shots would have kept them in the game.  Freethrow shooting let MLS down also with the Cardinals connecting on only 9 of 20.  It was a good game to get out of their system before the tournament begins.  The lady Cardinals finished 11-9 on the season, 8-6 in conference play.  The now play Bay City All-Saints on Wednesday evening at 6:00 at the All-Saints gym.

MLS - 63  Bay City All-Saints  48

The Lady Cardinals first district game was against Bay City All-Saints on their home floor.  The Cougars played well and stayed in the game by shooting well.  Repeatedly they were able to break down the MLS defense for easy scores in the first half and took a 30-27 lead into the locker room.  The Cardinals recommitted to just playing good, sound, man-to-man in the second have and were able to limit the Cougar's shots.  Seminary's offense was good the whole game, but especially in the 3rd quarter where they were 9 for 18, including 3 striaght 3 pointers by Almanda Aldrich.  A 23-8 differential in the 3rd led to a 12 point MLS lead going into the 4th.  The lead got as high as 18 as Bay CIty was forced to foul.  For the game, All-Saints shot 50% while MLS shot 43%.  The difference was the MLS outrebounded their hosts and had fewer turnovers.
